Discovery of radioactivity and of the atomic nucleus
Rutherford and Marie Curie discovered , with others, radioactivity and the atomic nucleus in the early twentieth century.
IN2P3

The aim of this web site is to explain radioactivity and its applications to the general public. It has been created in France and maintained by physicists with the help of the Science Editor EDP-Sciences (EDITIONS DE PHYSIQUE).

GENERAL CHAPTERS

The first three chapters describe the phenomenon, radioactivity in our environment (natural or due to man), the doses of radiation, their effects and the means of protection against them.

Chapter 1 : THE PHENOMENON
Chapter 2 : RADIOACTIVITY AROUND US
Chapter 3 : EFFECTS AND DOSES OF RADIOACTIVITY, RADIOPROTECTION

Applications of radioactivity and gamma and X-rays in medicine
Radioisotopes are used in medical imagery and radiotherapies.

CHAPTERS : APPLICATIONS OF RADIOACTIVITY

The following three chapters describe the applications of radoactivity and more generally of radiation.

Chapter 4 : APPLICATIONS IN MEDICINE
Chapter 5 : APPLICATIONS IN SCIENCE AND RESEARCH
Chapter 6 : APPLICATIONS IN CULTURE

Nuclear fission and Nuclear Energy
Use the internal energy of the atomic nucleus to produce energy

CHAPTERS ON NUCLEAR ENERGY AND RADIOACTIVE WASTE

The two final chapters are devoted to the phenomenon of nuclear fission, with its application to nuclear energy and the radioactive waste produced by this industry.

Chapter 7 : NUCLEAR ENERGY
Chapter 8 : RADIOACTIVE WASTE
