Cosmic gamma rays
Some of the gamma rays produced in violent stellar reactions are far more energetic than the gamma rays emitted by atomic nuclei, which are of the order of millions of electronvolts (MeV). This map of the sky shows the origins of gamma rays with energies above 100 MeV as observed by a detector (EGRET) stationed on a satellite. While the majority of these gamma rays originate from our galaxy (the Milky Way), we can also see brighter sources that are from farther away.
